They met each other casually when Aishwarya was shooting with Bobby Deol for Aur Pyar Hogaya in 1997.at that time she was dating Salman Khan and Abhishek was reportedly engaged to Karishma Kapoor.
They became good friends when they started working on their films,Dhai Akshar Prem Ke (2000) and Kuch Naa Kaho (2003).
By this time, Aishwarya had broken up with Salman Khan and Abhishek had broken his engagement with Karishma Kapoor.Aishwarya was reportedly involved with Vivek Oberoi but this relationship did not last too long.
Friendship to Love

They say that friendship is the first step towards love and it was absolutely true for the two superstars.They started working together in more films like Dhoom 2,Guru and Umrao Jaan in the years 2006 and 2007.
Their hearts were meant to be together and they stay united forever.
It was in 2005, on the sets of Bunty aur Bublli that they started getting attracted to each other.The famous item song,’Kajra Re’ , which featured Aishwarya was being shooted.
Her beauty and elegance could melt anyone’s heart but she gave her heart to this tall, handsome young man and he proposed to her in New York.

When Abhishek proposed to Aishwarya she immediately agreed.
Abhishek revealed about what was going on in his mind when he proposed to Aishwarya, “I was filming in New York for a movie. And, I used to stand on the balcony of my hotel room and wish that, ‘One day, wouldn’t it be nice if I was together with her, married. Years later, we were there for the premiere of Guru. After the premiere, we were back in the hotel. So, I took her to the very same balcony, and I asked her to marry me.”
Call it the call of destiny or the prediction of love , they were meant to be together now.
Abhishek’s proposal was spontaneous , and he was not prepared with a ring. He had given her a studio prop to propose immediately and she had happily obliged.
This proposal is unique and the not magical but real definitions of expressing love.
Does one need only a diamond ring to propose to his lady?
Definitely Not, and their lovely relationship is evidence to their non-attachment of materialistic things to express their love for each other.

On January 14, the two lovebirds got engaged to each other at the Bachchan residence.They became more open and official about their relationship.Their impending marriage had become the talk of the town.
She began frequenting her future in-laws ‘ house and their wedding preparations were in full swing, and so were their dates!

There were quite a few controversies and unwanted publicity before their marriage like Aishwarya’s manglik dosh or the sizzling chemistry between Aishwarya and Abhishek which got famous for all the wrong reasons.
There was also an incident of a publicity stunt by a girl named Jhanvi Kapoor, who slashed her wrist to prove that Abhishek had betrayed her with a marriage promise.
Despite all these unwarranted incidents, they held on to each other and decided to get married.

There was an ultimate media coverage of the Mangalore style wedding of the superstars on April 20,2007.
The baaraat started from their house,Jalsa to their other house, Prateeksha amidst much fanfare.Their guest list included the top poiliticians, celebrities and fellow actors who were present to bless the famous couple.
Decked up in flowers with stunning outfits, their ceremonies were held with much pomp and traditions.
It was the top news for many days and had everyone trying to get a glimpse of the proceedings.
The happy couple started their marriage on a very blessed and happy note together.

He was her support and the perfect husband who would pamper and treat her like his queen.She was the lucky lady who felt in cloud nine every day , all thanks to her fame, support form family and her charming husband.
They welcomed their little bundle of joy,Aradhya , on November 16,2011 who looked like the photo copy of Aishwarya in her childhood.
Eleven years post marriage and still going strong inspite of much media intervention regarding her relationship turning sour with her in-laws .But, they have held on to each other like rock -solid logs which never depart.
Aishwarya praised her better-half with beautiful words to describe their bond, “Abhishek is my source of inspiration. He is always so supportive. Whenever I am confused and don’t know what to do, I look at him and he solves the duality in me like magic. He is the real ‘Padma Shri’ and I’m his ‘Padma Shrimati’.”
They have always shared their responsibility of taking care of their child and been with each other whenever their work required them to travel abroad.
The lucky man revealed in an interview, “Aishwarya is my anchor. She is my buddy, my closest friend. I can discuss anything with her. Our relationship is not based on her being Aishwarya Rai or me coming from an illustrious family. It is just about two people falling in love which has organically grown. We started during Guru. It was meant to be.”
Now, that is what we call mutual admiration , trust and respect which is required for any marriage to keep going .We wish ‘Abhi-Ash’ many more years of togetherness and love , giving us more couple with that wonderful display of trust.
